Course Description

The single most lethal aspect of police work is suicide. The suicide rate for police
officers is two to three times the rate of the general population, and nearly three
times as many officers kill themselves as are killed by criminals in the line of duty.
Many cases of suicide reflect the cumulative impact of several stressors, often
involving a combination of relationship and work-related problems
Though no one in law enforcement wants the experience of dealing with a fellow
police officer in an active suicidal crisis, personnel of all ranks need to prepare for
how to handle, supervise, or delegate this type of situation. Incidents requiring a
police response often are complex, emotional, and dangerous.
You will learn about factors contributing to a suicidal crisis, the unique dynamics
of a law enforcement response, the decision to request mutual aid and specific
techniques for communicating with an actively suicidal officer.
The training day will consist of 4 hours of lecture and 4 hours of a challenging
scenario, facilitated by experienced crisis negotiation trainers. Although students
and teams are encouraged to bring their own equipment, equipment and supplies
will be available.
Students attending on their own will be placed on ad hoc teams for the scenario or
may volunteer as a co-facilitator or role player.

LUNCH: Light refreshments will be provided throughout the day.
The transition from the lecture portion of the training to the practical
portion will be relatively quick and may result in a shorter lunch break. In
consideration of a potentially short lunch break, attendees may consider
bringing a bag lunch or ordering out. There are several nearby lunch spots
that deliver and/or provide take-out as an option
