Prerequisites:
While this course is designed for members of crisis negotiation teams, it is open to all members of law-enforcement or corrections, sworn or non-sworn, including SROs, CIT officers, dispatchers, support personnel, or mental health professionals or chaplains working in support of law-enforcement activities.

Course Description:
Developing effective questions is an essential aspect of crisis negotiation, as questions begin the intervention process and serve as a method of eliciting important information. This course will train negotiators to ask questions and make statements with a purpose, not just recycle the same questions over and over or to ask questions just for the sake of asking questions. Students will learn how to ask questions that emphasize positive choices by the subject versus directing the subject’s actions. Students will also learn how to diffuse emotions through the application of ‘PEARLS’, reframing techniques, as well as methods for keeping the dialogue productive. Lastly, students will learn how to prepare responses using “Bunches of Five”

- Develop questions in consideration of an effective negotiation strategy
- Ask questions and provide responses which keep the dialogue productive
- Prepare responses to predictable dialogue
Who should attend this course: Crisis negotiators and those who conduct crisis intervention interviews, CIT Officers, and ECIT Officers
Hours: 3-hour course
Readings: Students will receive a handout by the instructor prior to the class start.
Assessments (Project/ Tests, etc.): Students are expected to participate in class discussions as well as participate in small group activities. Check-on-learning quizzes may be conducted in courses where small group activities are not possible.
